Climate & cropping calendar

450–550 mm average annual rainfall, concentrated November–March. Among the wetter regions of Namibia but with high inter-annual variability.

Single rainy season. Land preparation October–November; planting on first effective rains (typically late November to mid-December); harvest April–June.

Documented drought years in the last decade: 2013, 2016, 2019. Each triggered national drought relief and reduced mahangu yields by 30–60% in the affected season.

Dominant crops

Mahangu (pearl millet)
The staple. Grown on virtually every smallholder plot.
Sorghum
Secondary cereal, more drought-tolerant than maize.
Maize
Grown where soils and moisture allow, often intercropped with mahangu.
Cowpeas, groundnuts
Nitrogen-fixing legumes, intercropped with cereals.
Horticulture (pumpkin, watermelon, leafy greens)
Household gardens, some smallholder market production.

Livestock

Cattle
Communal grazing; herd-based wealth and social capital. NCA (Northern Communal Areas) market access constrained by foot-and-mouth controls south of the Veterinary Cordon Fence.
Goats
Most common small stock. Drought-resilient and the working capital of smallholder households.
Donkeys
Used for traction (ploughing, transport).
Poultry
Household-scale; growing interest in commercial broiler production.

Documented pests & diseases

Most damaging insect pest of pearl millet in the north-central regions. Larvae bore into stems, causing dead-heart and lodging.
Fungal disease; common in wet seasons. MAWLR advises early planting and resistant varieties.
Established in maize and present on mahangu. MAWLR pest bulletins track outbreaks.
Major grain-loss pest in maturing mahangu.
